The Most Effective PhD Dissertation Proposal Writing Guidelines

Academic writing requires a great deal more attention to detail than other styles. A slight error can lead to a lower grade or the complete misunderstanding of your thesis statement. When it comes to PhD dissertation proposals, even worse can happen: you may have to start all over with your writing because the committee has not been adequately convinced that your proposed research has merit. This is a scenario that no student wishes to experience. The following are some guidelines that you can employ to keep that from taking place.

Read successfully written proposals from your field

By compiling a batch of very well written samples, you can give yourself clues as to what makes them successful. This is done by reading them all and making note of what they have in common. Perhaps the topic they proposed to research were similar or the tone that they wrote with had certain similarities. Having listed these things you can decide which ones can be applied to your own work without clashing with the style you generally employ when you write.

Consult with your professor about specific requirements

As much as every field has its own general requirements, you may notice that certain colleges, universities or even individual professors may want students to submit their work in slightly different ways. If you have any doubts about this, ask your professor directly. He or she should have mentioned these specific requirements if they exist but there is no harm in asking for further clarification if you suspect you may need it.

Read the guide booklet and other supplemental texts

There are many styles of academic writing. Depending on the field of study you have chosen, you may be expected to submit your work in APA, MLA or some other format. Failure to obey the rules of that format will reflect poorly on your proposal even if the majority of your points were well stated. Read the guide booklets and if you need additional help, find other texts that fill in those blanks for you.

Consider using a template

Templates make academic writing simpler because they basically show you what you need to include and where it should be placed. They make it nearly impossible to accidentally not include salient features.

As you get started you will notice that the process gets simpler as it goes along.
